Music In Society – Business

How business and industry affects music makers and users in society

Historical factors

https://blogs.ubc.ca/chopinboard/2015/04/21/24/

Originally, music printing first evolved from Gutenberg’s printing press during the 15th century. Engraving of music was done on copper or steel with punches to indicate tempo expressions, key signatures, rests and clefs. The 20th century introduced a new form of music printing e.g. scores, Note writer, Finale and Sibelius.

Due to the lack of copyright during the 16th century many artists and composers had been taken advantage of. Artists and composers made agreements between them and fellow publishers which allowed them to come to an agreement about how many printed copies could be distributed to which brought the composers and artists honor and wealth.

However, the 21st centuries standards have changed thus changing the income for both artist and publishers, basing their income from royalties and fees from sales and performances. The publishing and printing industry revolve more around copyright and preventing legal disputes.

Music as commodity

https://festivalpeak.com/is-music-a-commodity-or-a-marketing-means-to-profit-an-artist-s-career-4ea6b51f382e

Music can be seen as a commodity due to its lack of acknowledgement as an art form. Music has been used to conduct hard copies and means to host performances to maximize profit rather than to be appreciated as a craft and present artistic vision.

Technology has developed the way music is created by artists and delivered to consumers as well as opened new platforms such as radio, TV and streaming for music to be accessed. This has changed the value of music seeing it more as a product and service that follows a trend rather than an average activity or hobby for self-expression. More businesses such as labels have been established to sign and develop artists so they can use artists and their music as a product to sell and run their business rather than considering the creative potential and the power music has on consumers internally.

Music is provided as a convenience thus has been conditioned towards a certain style which is molding each genre into one style making it hard to tell the difference between genres such as pop and country.

Market forces

https://prezi.com/eihvureqr8wd/market-forces-within-the-music-industry/

http://www.contiki.com/six-two/10-ways-music-helps-cultural-identity/

Many artists within the music industry like to follow a common trend when it comes to fashion and music. Cultural references have been made by a variety of artists as they learn to differentiate their own style from others in order to sell themselves to companies and audiences, fashion and music have been intertwined to set the ground for specific genres in order for it to sell.

Certain genres are used due to its popularity in order to open a marketing window for brands to sell their clothing for example, Hip hop and trap rappers are often seen wearing large chains and high-end brands such as Gucci and Versace. This sort of marketing allows brands to sponsor an artist in order to promote their brand to influence that artists audience to invest in the same clothing as the artist. Music also markets cultural identity, Business use artists to sell culture through music with different languages or sounds related to a specific culture.

Corporate sponsorship

https://www.digitaltrends.com/music/music-sponsorships-big-trend/

Corporate sponsorships affect music makes and users in society as it is often seen that artists and music businesses are relying on sponsorships from larger companies as a source of income rather than from selling records and merchandise. Artists such as Jay z and Kanye west partnered with Samsung to present content by Samsung. When two popular brands come into association not only can this benefit both brands profitably but also reputation wise.

Charitable bodies and foundations

https://www.youthmusic.org.uk/

Charities and foundations make a large contribution to music. Foundations such as Youth music invest into music projects for youth experiencing challenging circumstances who are deprived of these opportunities. These charities can increase personal development of future artist that can change aspects of the music industry.

Music In Society – Politics

How politics has affected music makers and users in society

Historical factors

Politics has had a huge impact on the music industry for both makers and users, influencing many artists to take on new form of music to raise awareness of such political issues within the community. Artists such as Bob Marley used music as a way to increase awareness about racism and discrimination within politics with references in one of his pieces called ‘buffalo soldier’.

Whether an artist uses their platform for a positive or negative form of awareness is solely down to the individual as many use they’re music to express their internal resentment towards different political issues. Political issues affect many individuals therefore those who listen to the music referring to those issues are more likely either going to agree or disagree as well as act upon the issues being mentioned.

Government funding

The government believe in students receiving a broad and balanced education thus believe that students should have access and the opportunity to learn about the creative arts to develop their own personal interests.

However, government funding for music in the UK has been limited due to the cut of costs for that area and subject, with only 196 million pounds invested into that department in education over a period of three years this has led to restriction of resources and course hours being cut. Conservative parties mainly emphasis their investment into core subjects such as English, math and science

Legislation and Laws

https://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p01_uk_copyright_law

http://noiseabatementsociety.com/helpline-and-support/faqs/

The music industry has faced many issues with regards to copyright. Artists sampling music from another artist without legal permission causing lawsuits. The government has issued laws to prevent these occurrences from happening by introducing the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988

Additionally, other laws have been established for music consumers for those who intend to play music out loud in a residential area. The Noise Act 1996 states that music should be turned off or down during the hours of night referred as the hours between 11pm to 7am.

Censorship

The 1927 Radio Act was created to regulate radio use for it to only be used for public interest and convenience. In 1934 the federal communication commission was formed to also regulate radio use. This law and agency was used against artists that released content which included profanity, drugs and sexual nature to the public. In 1966 the rolling stones ‘I cant get no satisfaction’ record was refused by selective radio station due to its sexual nature.

The FCC took it upon themselves to fine many radio stations for playing provocative tracks which then lead the FFC to facing a lawsuit after threatening the license of a radio station for playing songs which emphasised drugs and profanity by which they were then reminded that it is not illegal to sing about drugs regardless of the object being illegal itself.

Support

Music education hubs were established to help provided youth with the opportunity to be able to have access to music education. These hubs were established in 2012 as a response to the governments national plan for music education and were funded by local authorities and councils.

Croydon music and arts are another local service that aim to support youth with their creative practices. This business local services offers performance opportunities, vocal and instrument tuition and music centres which has been funded by partnerships including the mayor of London, the jack petchy foundation and the brit school.

Music In Society – Technology

How has technology affected music making and consumption?

Technology itself has rapidly strengthened alongside societies development and their needs, offering high quality equipment that can produce outcomes of a higher standard. These factors include:

Development of production software

The development of music software was followed alongside the development of computer hardware. During the 1970’s this development influenced 50 new music programs to be created including Real time Cmix and Csound, both computer-programming languages. The later enhancement of MIDI encouraged further progress in this area, as MIDI was the link between the hardware and software. MIDI codes instructions from electronic music hardware to music production software through a computer.

Production programs such as Logic pro or Garage band are usually accessible through app stores such as Apple app store, Google play or already built into the device. Production software currently comes in the form of a package, now offering a variety of plug – ins, sounds, pitch control, multi track recording and much more all formed from computerised settings, instruments, synths and effects. Over time the software also adapted to technology’s high quality design by presenting a sleek, high definition layout, professionals find new ways to advance the software whether that’s adding new multitasking features, higher quality programming or bug fixes thus making the software more simplified to use.

This software usage can be heard in almost every piece of music released by artists from the 1970’s up to this present day. This is due to the large amounts of benefits from using software rather than manually recording each instrument one at a time. Although this takes artists away from the live sound aspect the software allows you to build layers with different sounds without having to spare time towards setting up equipment, tuning instruments and booking musicians. Some instruments and sounds aren’t always accessible in different areas therefore music software such as Logic pro makes it easier by offering sounds ranging from modern, vintage, synth, cinematic and acoustic, allowing artists to capture and produce the specific sound that suit their needs at anytime.

Computerised equipment

Software has adapted features that enable individuals to play a variety of musical instruments without physically having the equipment. This is done using production software such as garage band or logic pro. By selecting the instrument or sound desired then playing the notes on a MIDI keyboard this is then translates into MIDI information.

Music software also allows the ability to do mixing without the needs of a physical mixing desk due to the software incorporating features and tools on the channel strips that corresponds to the tracks. These channel strips include a mute and solo button, volume and level meter faders, pan/balance knob, also enabling plug – ins and effects to be added to the track.

Although this is practical for on the go or home mixing, using this as a source of creating and recording music has its limitations. This form wouldn’t be appropriate for bands as using music software such as logic doesn’t allow musicians to record each instrument used in a band thus making it harder to isolate selected sections or instruments, increasing/decreasing the dynamics of different sections or bringing instruments in at different segments.

Equipment developing

Hardware has become more sustainable for new software features, compared to machinery used now, out dated hardware was limited in what features it acquired. Discovered in the 1930’s, multi track recording first started with the development of magnetism as a form of magnetic recording to immerse multiple tracks onto one storage medium. Audio data was converted into magnetic field by embedding the data onto the magnetic surface of the tape. Later on during the 1950’s tape recorders was induced to further development from a company named Ampex, which lead to the creation of an 8-track recorder known as Sel-Sync.This was done through experiments with electric guitars. Multi track recording hardware ranged from 2,6,8,16 and 24 multi tracks to record onto. By the 1990’s companies had been introducing Digital audio multi track recording software such as pro tools and Cubase.

The sampler is a piece of equipment that instead of using new sounds to generate a track it uses sound recordings. These sounds can be pitch bended or have effects and fillers layered to create a higher or lower sound or a different chord.

Accessibility

Technology has advanced in many areas. Different formats including phones, iPod’s, ipads, computers and laptops have become available across different stores in different regions. Many of these formats enable individuals to be able to purchase and easily access software or even have it already built into the system as well also use these pieces of technology as a source of listening to music. Technology has become more portable allowing individuals on the go to be able to use software or listen to music anywhere at any time.

Beforehand, Music was only accessible through radios or by playing vinyl records on a record player during the 1940’s .The record player has an inbuilt speaker system and when the inbuilt needle that is attached to the tonearm comes into contact with the grooves on the vinyl record it produces audible sound. Radios were a popular source of entertainment during world war two.

Physical and virtual audio formats

Audio formats have varied over time due to the development of technology. The more technology progresses consumers prefer virtual audio formats rather than physical due to virtual being more convenient and accessible. Previously people could access music by purchasing caset tapes and vinyl records from distributors. This then progressed into CD’s. It wasn’t until the Internet first came about when individuals could listen to and purchase music online from various platforms such as iTunes as well as streaming on apps such as apple music, Spotify and YouTube. These virtual music files are known as MP3 files, which can be played on MP3 players, phones and computers. However, this circumstance has lead to piracy where individuals illegally download albums and tracks for free online thus leading in downfall in sales of physical and audio formats from platforms.

Music In Society

Functions of music in society:

The functions of music in society have developed at a diverse rate, harbouring a different sense of purpose for each individual. Some of the most common functions of music through out the different eras include:

Expressing Culture:

Music has been seen as a heritage for many cultures. Each culture has formed a different style of sound thus influencing distinct genres of music for example

Has beemaxresdefault.jpgn known to be associated and represented the heritage of music for parts of Portugal, Spain and Latin America. The style and sound of the music expresses their cultural background giving us an understanding of where those sounds originated from as well as the people who made them.

As music expressed the ancestral roots of different nationalities, it also made us aware of how the sound and style of the music came to be, educating us of the variety of instruments that were used and found only in certain regions across different countries. Instruments such as the drums were first found in China dating back to 5500BC.

Within the period of slavery plantations offered a variety of instruments, which influenced the sound of the music. For example plantations based in southern America created sounds which then adapted into gospel and blues whilst other southern plantations adapted rhythms into dance and country music. Here is an image of the Rosedown plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana, United States:RosedownWM.JPG

Over time music was used as a coded message for the slaves giving them instructions of how to escape by revealing where to go, a well-known song sang during that period was ‘wade in the water’ signifying to those listening that they should follow the trail into the water to prevent people and their hunting dogs from finding their trace. During the 1700’s as a form of communication during slavery between individuals on the plantations until they were later banned due to the exposure of the usage for the drums.

Expressing Religion and political views:

Music has also been used in a spiritual nature to express the love for God and other religious icons. Individuals believe singing is a form of worship thus used in that manner to worship and praise god by singing songs known as hymns.it is used to emphasise the diversity within Gods creation by coming together to sing these songs. Vocals are used as the highest form of expression during the worshiping process, it is to be said that a church that does not sing lacks faith as well as unity.

A lot of music emphasises political controversy, whether they leave messages in their music about peace, war or the most recent shootings of unarmed citizens who were killed by federal representatives. Many rappers and singers today use music to express how they feel and to discuss the distorted upbringing they had which they feel was influenced by the

government with rappers such as 21 savage stating lyrics ‘civil rights came so the flood the hood with coke (cocaine)’ and ‘They killed Martin Luther King and all he did was spoke’. When referring to ‘they’ he indicates it is towards the corrupt deeds of the government and law enforcement. https://www.rca.org/resources/theology-and-place-music-worship

Source of Entertainment:

Music is a form of entertainment that can be enjoyed in many ways. One form includes being able to attend festivals, concerts and gigs. These allow individuals to see artists alongside their band perform live. This gives individuals the opportunity to discover new sounds and socialise and enjoy the performance with those surrounding them, giving them an opportunity to relieve any stress.

nintchdbpict000304022016.jpgIt can also be visually entertaining and mentally stimulating. Many artists like to create music videos to feature with the track. These videos can be accessed via the Internet on website such as YouTube and vevo or on TV with channels such as 4Music,This also helps individuals be aware of newer music out due to the platform its being presented on some individuals may not listen to the radio as much. However music videos mainly benefit the artist, as well as its use for artistic purposes music videos are used to promote their music, which should increase sales.

Enhancing climax and emotions in movies:

Music has a huge impact on the emotional climax and atmosphere within films. Not only do the visuals play a huge part in conveying emotion but music is one of the factors that enable the film to reach its score. Audio is used to stimulate viewer’s brains thus building an image of a time and a place, which leads to a sense of feeling and emotion. Specifically, It is to be said that the tempo is what causes our minds and body to react to music further adds identity to a movie or series. Recognisable theme tunes or songs played within the movie can leave a mark on viewers.

Film music can also portray upcoming events and foreshadow what might happen in an upcoming scene. If you use scary and foreboding styles of sound and music this can indicate to viewers that characters may be in danger thus leading to something bad happening. Different sounds and music can present to viewers the different outcome for movies, if a movie entered an opening scene with sad and thoughtful music this might portray a sense of struggle, grief, despair or even lack of worth therefore suggesting why might have happened or will happen.

Here is a clear example of how different music selections for an opening of the lion king can portray the storyline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecYgqLml89c

Influences fashion, identity and behaviour:

A lot of styles of fashion havemigos-feb-2017-billboard-1548.jpg been connected to genres of music, one of which was those who listen to upbeat music tend to dress more vibrantly compared to those who opt for more of a relaxing genre of music which could be portrayed through their style. Although this idea isn’t 100% true, music does affect individuals dress sense due to appealing more towards the artist of music and genre’s style. A lot of youth who listen to rap and mumble rap tend to be influenced by the way artists such as Lil yachty, Kodak black and Migos dress and present themselves. Smothering themselves in high end branded clothing and exquisite diamond submerged jewellery. Most artists are the cause for certain fashion trends that we see today, with influences from notorious BIG, well known for his mix of high street and high end fashion. Topped with his statement Versace glasses.

Music is a great way for individuals to share and channel common emotions and intentions. Individuals that listen to genres such as rap are more inclined to start speaking the dialect mentioned in the songs and further dress like the supposed rapper their listening to. Another example would be that individuals who listen to a lot of music from artists like Aaliyah inherit gentler and subtle behaviour as well as mind-set as they gradually listen to her more and more and feel that her 90’s style impacts how they dress today.

Source of income for artists:

The music industry has offered many job opportunities as well as different ways and platforms to earn an income. One being for musicians who earn their income via selling online or in-store platforms such as iTunes offers access for consumers to be able to purchase albums or singles. Stores such as HMV also enable consumers to purchase hard copies of albums in forms of a CD or even vinyl. A lot of artists also tend to sell and promote themselves by performing at gigs, going on their own tour or go as a featuring act, not only does this increase recognition for the artist in the music industry its an opportunity to earn money and gain sponsors.

An additional source of income for artists would be royalties. Artists are entitled to royalties if their song is featured or played in a movie, adverts, radio, concerts, public places etc. In order for these places to proceed with playing this music they need to have invest in a PPL licence from the performing rights society. Money that is collected from this licence is then distributed between individuals that were involved in the composition, song writing and publishing.
